From Microphone to Pen and Paper: Artists Who Forayed in the Art of Writing Lyrics

To become successful in the music business, an artist needs to be able to do many things. An artist cannot only be a singer; he or she needs to expand his or her horizons by trying out other things. Justin Timberlake is a notable example of how this can be done properly. From the typical member of a popular boy band, Justin Timberlake reinvented himself as a multimedia artist. Amy Winehouse, for instance, is infamous and notorious for her reputation. She’s been arrested for possession of illegal drugs, and her husband was arrested for assault. Amy was also widely criticized for her inconsistent performance during her concert tours. However, she is also a much acclaimed songwriter, with lyrics that can thug even t! he toughest heartstrings. For instance, Amy wrote the lyrics of “Back To Black” basing it on her personal experience. The lyrics of the song pertain to how her husband returned to a former flame, hence the title of the song. But perhaps no other lyrics written by Amy can be as popular as “Rehab.” According to reports, the lyrics of this song came about when members of her management group urged her to go to rehab due to her drug use. She said the iconic words that can be found in the lyricsâ€"hence the origin of the song.

Celine Dion, too, occasionally writes lyrics for her songs. The likes of Celine are often seen as those who aren’t likely to churn out lyrics of their music, but she defined the expectations and has a written a few song lyrics. Of course, most of her more popular songs were written by other songwriters. These would include “My Heart Will Go On” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Still, it is admirable that someone like Celine would t! ry her hand on writing lyrics. Unfortunately, she recently sai! d in an interview that she cannot find the time to write songs.

Kelly Clarkson’s attempt to write original material for her album was also well documented, as it caused conflict with her and her recording company. The company reported urged her to seek the help of the songwriters who helped them create her previous hits, but she was adamant on writing her own lyrics and creating her own music. The result of this was her album My December, which was successful in its own right, selling more than one million copies in America alone. But it was less successful than her previous records.

Writing lyrics and singing are often connectedâ€"hence the number of singers who also write their own lyrics. As these examples would show, their success rate is unpredictable. Which leaves the question: should they leave the writing of lyrics to professionals, or should artists write the lyrics of their songs?
