Would You Like to Know How to Play Guitar?

When the Beatles first played on the Ed Sullivan show back in the early sixties, guitar sales and guitar lessons went through the roof here in the United States. And I was one of those statistics, as was my younger brother. We both wanted electric guitars and we both got them and that's when the work started, for me anyway. Now that I had a guitar it was time to learn how to play guitar so I signed up for weekly guitar lessons at the local music store. And after a few years of learning how to play guitar I was fairly decent at it. Not great but decent enough to play most anything to a point that it could be recognized. My younger brother, on the other hand, did not take lessons to learn how to play guitar. He taught himself, all by ear. And by this time his guitar playing was nearly world class. He was a kid with an incredible talent and at a very young age I believe he really could hold his own with the top guitar players in the world.

Now, anyone can learn how to play guitar. And there are many different ways of learning now. Some are strictly with music books and or CD's that walk you through the steps and others are the old fashion way with an instructor. What no one can teach you is talent. Talent is that all important thing that cannot be explained or taught. You either have it or you don't. It is believed by many that every one has a talent for something and that may well be true. And perhaps it is up to each individual to discover what their talent is. Myself for instance, all these years later, can play a guitar very well and make most people believe that I am really good, but the honest truth is that I still cannot hold a candle to the talent of my little brother and if we ever sat together playing guitars, that difference would be immediately noticeable by anyone who listened. Make no mistake about that.

So learning how to play guitar may never really get you anywhere but it can still bring you many years of personal enjoyment and fulfillment. Just learning how to strum chords for a few songs can be a lot of fun.
